Khaberni - Omar Salameh, spokesperson for the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, stated on Saturday that water storage in the main dams has increased to 325 million m³ of the total storage capacity.
Salameh added that the volume of water in desert pits and dams in 2025 reached 250 million m³, noting that 15 desert dams and pits have been implemented in various regions of the kingdom, according to the kingdom.
He mentioned that water reduced the water loss during the third quarter of the current year by 4.4%, bringing the water loss rate in all areas of the kingdom to 40.9% compared with the third quarter of 2024, which was 45.3%, achieving the national water strategy 2023-2040.
The ministry indicated that this comes as part of a strategy to reduce water loss, resulting from intensifying efforts to reduce water loss and incorporating modern technology in the distribution, management, and control of water sources, digital transformation, and involving the private sector in maintenance operations, meter reading, and billing which achieved an accuracy of 98% in readings, increased the number of maintenance teams across the kingdom, and replaced one million malfunctioning water meters, half of which in our water regions.
Alongside intensifying campaigns to control infringements, which during 2025 led to the detection of more than 11,519 infringements on main lines and saved 10.8 million m³ in the kingdom during the third quarter of 2025 and approximately 31.4 million m³ during the current year, reflecting improvements in water supply to citizens in all regions and also transitioning to natural flow in various areas.
The ministry confirmed that this is a significant national achievement that will greatly reflect on improving water services in all regions of the kingdom.
It mentioned that water loss is a top priority in the water sector through enhancing partnerships with the local private sector as the first experience at the regional level, which contributed to a cumulative reduction in loss from the beginning of the year to the end of the third quarter of 2025 by 5.3% compared with the similar period of the previous year 2024.
The ministry clarified that the loss reduction strategy that began in 2021 was successful annually in reducing the loss from 52.5% in 2021/2022 by an annual rate of 2%, indicating that loss reduction projects included restructuring distribution areas and dividing main areas into sub-areas that are easily monitored and managed, employing modern technologies like ERP, Cash Desk, X7 programs, and launching the Ministry of Water and Irrigation app that provided advanced electronic services for handling all citizens' reports and improved water supply operations.
