Damascus announces 5 new exploration zones on the Syrian coast for gas exploration

Khaberni - The CEO of the "Syrian Petroleum Company," Yousef Qublawi, announced on Wednesday the existence of 5 new gas exploration zones in the coastal area.

Qublawi added in statements to the official "Al-Ikhbariya" channel: "We aim to develop our oil fields and explore new ones, and within a short period, the volume of gas production in Syria will be doubled."

He continued: "Our plan relies on significantly increasing the volume of gas production before the year 2030."

He mentioned that there are "plans and studies for exploration in the south of Damascus (south) without a foreign intermediary, and there are 5 new exploration areas on the Syrian coast (not specified)."

Qublawi affirmed that "Syria will be an important center for gas distribution in Europe, and the development plans of the company will increase the individual income of citizens."

He also pointed to the company having "high competencies, and we plan for the Syrian company to be globally outstanding, and to invest outside Syria."

On Tuesday, the "Syrian Petroleum Company" and the American "ConocoPhillips" signed a memorandum of understanding in the field of gas, to enhance cooperation in developing and exploring gas fields, and exchanging technical expertise between the two sides, according to Al-Ikhbariya.

According to 2015 statistics, the confirmed gas reserves in Syria were about 8.5 trillion cubic feet, while the average daily production of non-associated gas is about 250 million cubic meters, representing 58 percent of the total gas production in the country.

As for the gas associated with oil, it constitutes 28 percent of the production, with most of it coming from east of the Euphrates River (east).

The Syrian government is striving to improve the energy situation in the country, by signing agreements and memorandums of understanding with countries and institutions, with the aim of improving the service reality and the living standard of citizens.

On December 8, 2024, Syrian revolutionaries managed to enter the capital Damascus, declaring the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime (2000-2024), who inherited the rule from his father Hafez (1970-2000).
