Proper Scar Care

Khaberni - Scars often form after surgical procedures and mar the aesthetic appearance of the skin, and through proper care, they can fade over time.

About proper scar care, German doctor Steffen Emert emphasized that it is very important after surgery or injuries to keep the level of tension on the skin surface as low as possible.

Compression Bandage

The director of the Dermatology and Venereology Clinic at the University Medical Center in Rostock added that this can be achieved, for example, by using a compression bandage or adhesive bandages, noting that after surgery, adhesive strips are often placed at a 90-degree angle to the scar, where these strips, called wound closure strips, remain on the skin for 14 days.

If the wound is completely closed and there is no scab on the skin, the scar can then be treated with a special gel or gel bandages, which relieve itching and the sensation of tension, and aim to improve the appearance of the scar.

Cooling

Emert added that cryotherapy plays an important role in scar care, where the scar is sprayed twice with liquid nitrogen for ten seconds each time, briefly freezing the tissue, then thawing again. These effects work to soften the scar, as well as reduce the feeling of pain.

Massage

On his part, German physical therapist Nils Bringleland emphasized the importance of massaging the scar, by gently pressing on the scar and carefully moving it without pulling, as this supports the growth of new tissue and has a positive effect on the sensation of pain.

Bringleland pointed out that massage rollers designed for scar treatment can also be used.

Emert confirmed that itching, burning, and pain in old scars are signs of a problem, stressing the importance of consulting a doctor if they recur or persist over a long period, which also applies to scars that appear particularly prominent.
