Khaberni - A new clinical trial has questioned the long-standing medical advice that coffee stimulates a common type of heart rhythm disorder. The results of the trial showed that adults with atrial fibrillation who drink coffee daily have a much lower risk of recurrence compared to those who do not drink it.
The results indicated that moderate coffee consumption might protect the heart against heart rhythm disorders.
According to "Health Line," a research team from the University of California found that among 200 individuals diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, those who drank coffee daily had fewer repeated episodes than those who completely avoided caffeine over a period of six months.
Trial results
At the end of the trial, 47% of coffee drinkers had an episode of atrial fibrillation, compared to 64% of those who refrained from it.
This represents a 40% reduction in the risk of recurrent atrial fibrillation among individuals who regularly consume coffee.
Dr. Gregory Marcus, a professor of heart science at the university, said: "For those who enjoy drinking caffeinated coffee, they should not avoid it fearing that it may worsen their atrial fibrillation. This is the most conservative perspective on this matter."
He continued, "As for encouraging the use of caffeinated coffee for patients with atrial fibrillation, that would require further study."
