Microsoft Executive Describes Superintelligence as a Counterproductive Goal

Khaberni - While most of Silicon Valley races to achieve a superintelligence that surpasses human capabilities, the head of Microsoft’s AI department is trying to curb this ambition.

Mustafa Suleiman said in an episode of the "Silicon Valley Girl" podcast aired on Saturday that not only should the idea of superintelligence be avoided, but it should be considered "a counterproductive goal".

Suleiman added that superintelligence - the AI that is capable of thinking far beyond human capabilities - "does not seem like a positive vision for the future," according to a report by "Business Insider".

He continued: "It would be very difficult to contain something like this or align it with our values."

Suleiman, who co-founded the DeepMind lab - now a part of Google - before moving to "Microsoft," mentioned that his team is trying to develop superintelligence that supports human interests.

He also added that granting any form of consciousness or moral status to artificial intelligence is a mistake, saying: "These entities do not suffer. They do not feel pain... They only simulate high-quality conversation."

Suleiman's remarks come at a time when some industry leaders discuss developing superintelligence, with some suggesting it could be achieved in this decade.

Sam Altman, the CEO of the artificial intelligence company "OpenAI", described general intelligence - the intelligence that can think like humans - as the company's core mission. Altman earlier this year added that "OpenAI" has already started looking beyond general intelligence toward superintelligence.
