Get to know them Things we rarely see in our dreams

Khaberni - Dreams are a strange world filled with experiences that range between reality and fantasy.

While many recount their amazing and vague dreams, some daily details remain absent from this unconscious world.

Here are five things we rarely see in our dreams, according to scientists:

Smartphones

An analytical study of over 16,000 dreams showed that smartphones appear only in 3.55% of women's dreams and 2.69% of men's dreams, a very small percentage compared to other technologies such as cars which appear in about 9% of dreams.

Scientists suggest that this phenomenon may be related to the purpose that dreams were created for. According to the "threat simulation hypothesis", dreams act as a defense mechanism to train the brain to face life-threatening dangers. Since phones have not been part of our evolutionary lives for very long, they do not pose a threat or danger that requires training for.

Writing and Texts

One of the strangest characteristics of dreams is that people often find it difficult to read written texts. When documents or writings appear in dreams, the text usually turns into unclear symbols or nonsense that cannot be deciphered. While some believe they are able to understand the texts, this happens rarely.

Scientists explain this by noting that the areas of the brain responsible for processing language and texts are less active during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, which makes dreams lack fine details like texts and writings.

Numbers and Equations

If you have a dream involving a math exam, you might find that the numbers and equations are distorted or unclear. This phenomenon is common in dreams, where numbers lack stability, appearing variable and inaccurate. This is due to dreams not relying on the precise details we see in reality, but instead being generated internally according to events and emotions, making numbers often unstable.

Smells and Tastes

While humans experience the sense of smell and taste daily, these senses rarely appear in dreams. Studies have shown that less than 1% of women and men reported olfactory or gustatory experiences in their dreams.

Scientists believe this is because the brain circuits responsible for these senses may be less active during sleep, or that humans in general do not pay much attention to these senses compared to sight and hearing.

Your Reflection in the Mirror

A common belief is that one cannot see oneself in the mirror during a dream, but the reality is stranger than that. When people dream about seeing themselves in the mirror, their reflection is often distorted or completely different from reality. They might see themselves at a different age, or they may see injuries or unrealistic transformations. This phenomenon indicates that dreams lack stability in precise details like facial features, which is difficult for the brain to process during sleep.
