Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to Death

Khaberni - A court in Bangladesh sentenced Sheikh Hasina, the ousted prime minister, to death today, Monday, after convicting her of committing crimes against humanity during the 2024 uprising.

Hasina, exiled in India, and the former Minister of Interior, Asaduzzaman Khan, who is also believed to be in India, faced charges of crimes against humanity for killing hundreds of people during a student-led uprising in July and August 2024, and were tried in absentia.

The United Nations reported in February that up to 1,400 people may have been killed in the violence, while the health advisor for the country under the interim government stated that more than 800 people were killed and approximately 14,000 were injured.

While the former ruling party called for a shutdown coinciding with the verdict, Hasina urged her supporters in an audio message not to "worry" about the judgment.

It is worth mentioning that Sheikh Hasina survived at least 19 assassination attempts during her political career that spanned decades since 1981.
