Khaberni - Rashden & Diamonds and Coventry Sphinx, competitors in the English Amateur Football League, announced that they did not complete their match last Saturday after it was reported that the referee was verbally abused.
Rashden & Diamonds stated in a press release, "The match referee was subjected to what is said to be an abusive comment because she is a woman at the end of the first half, and attempts to identify the person who made the comment were unsuccessful."
The statement added, "We are deeply concerned and greatly disappointed that such behavior occurred during one of our matches. There is no place for any kind of discriminatory language or actions within our club or in the broader world of football."
Coach Elliot Sandy, in an interview with media affiliated with the club in Northamptonshire, said that the referee stopped the game while the person was being ejected from the stadium before she informed both teams during the interval that she did not feel comfortable continuing.
Coventry Sphinx stated, "We will conduct an investigation into the incident and will respond to any inquiries we receive from the league association and the English FA."
Both teams compete in the eighth tier of the English football league system.
