An Unexpected Cause of Female Baldness

Khaberni - Hair clips, available in various shapes and sizes, have become fashion essentials. However, it seems that their repeated use has severe consequences, as some women have complained about receding hairlines or noticeably bare spots.

Hair expert Rachel Valentine, according to the British newspaper Daily Mail, said she recently saw two women suffering from similar breakage around the crown area, and the cause was wearing a hair clip in exactly the same place every day.

She explains that "the prevalence of hairstyles that are secured using a hair clip is the reason for seeing the breakage around the crown area."

She also says, "We realize that these clips are better than hair ties, and they indeed are, but the problem lies in fixing your hair in exactly the same place every day, and there is a lot of tension in the same area, causing stress and frequent breakage."

Repeating the same hairstyle, especially tight hairstyles or clips placed in the same place, can cause continuous tension on the hair fibers, and over time this can cause a condition called traction alopecia.

This happens when the hair follicles—the tiny pores from which the hair grows—are subjected to excessive tension to the point that they become inflamed and damaged, leading in some cases to permanent baldness.

Prevention is Better Than Cure

Hair expert Valentine advised continuing to use clips, but changing their position or alternating between tying the hair back and leaving it loose.

She said, "Unfortunately, any repeated hairstyle will cause breakage because the tension in the same area is what causes the damage."

She advised women to change their hairstyle differently every day, using a hair clip one day, and a silk hair tie the next.

Meanwhile, a team from the UK Hair Transplant Clinic told the paper that many cases can improve if detected early, some are recoverable, but the key is not to wait too long.

They also suggested replacing the clip with a silk or non-snagging hair tie, which reduces pressure on the same areas.

Attention must be paid to the tension, for if one hairstyle causes pulling on the hair or pain in the scalp, this is a warning of the necessity to change it, and heavy hair extensions and tight braids can cause hair loss.

The British Association of Dermatologists confirms that if the pulling on the hair is stopped early, the hair follicles have a chance to heal and regrow as before.

Other causes of hair loss include hormonal changes, for example during menopause or after pregnancy, vitamin deficiencies, and genetic reasons.
