Khaberni - It is common for teenagers to observe menstrual cycles that last longer, ranging between 5 to 7 days, but as women age, the duration of the cycle often shortens to 3 or 4 days, due to natural changes in the hormonal cycle.
These differences may raise many questions: Does age really affect the duration of the menstrual cycle? And how does a woman know if her menstrual cycle is healthy or not?
Dr. Sukirti Jain, a gynecologist and obstetrician at Cloudnine Hospitals Group in Navi Mumbai, explains that the menstrual cycle reflects a woman's reproductive health and hormonal balance.
She confirms that it is normal for the cycle length to change slightly with age, but when there is a significant shortening, many women may feel concerned. Can age alone be responsible for shortening the menstrual cycle? That is what we are trying to understand now.
Studies and experts suggest that changes in the length of the menstrual cycle are linked to hormonal fluctuations occurring at different stages of a woman's life.
In the teenage years and early twenties, cycles are often irregular and extend between 26 and 35 days.
In the thirties and forties, a decrease in progesterone levels often leads to shorter cycles ranging from 21 to 25 days.
Healthy Menstrual Cycle According to Age Group
1. Teenagers: During this phase, the cycle can range from 25 to 45 days due to hormonal stabilization. Heavy or light blood flows may be observed, with the irregularity of the cycle being considered common and natural.
2. Twenties: In this period, the cycle stabilizes to become more regular and predictable, ranging every 28 to 35 days, with menstruation typically lasting from 3 to 7 days.
3. Thirties: The body begins to face minor hormonal changes that lead to shorter cycles, with the possibility of lighter bleeding or shorter durations.
4. Forties and beyond: The likelihood of experiencing irregular changes in the length and quantity of the menstrual cycle increases due to the onset of the pre-menopause phase, making the cycles shorter and the overall length irregular, until the complete cessation of the cycle with the onset of menopause.
When Should You Be Concerned About Changes in the Menstrual Cycle?
If you notice a notable and sudden increase in speed or shortening of the cycle duration, this may be an indicator of the need to consult a specialist for reassurance regarding hormonal balance and overall health.
A comprehensive understanding of natural changes helps women differentiate between what is usual and age-related from what requires medical intervention.
