America Cancels Tariffs on Australian Meats

Khaberni - Australia, on Sunday, cautiously welcomed President Donald Trump's cancellation of tariffs on beef, but also urged the United States at the same time to exempt Australian goods from all tariffs.

On Friday, Trump canceled tariffs on more than 200 food products, including beef, amid consumer concerns over rising American grocery prices.

By 2024, Australia has become the largest exporter of red meat to the United States, offering lower prices and types of lean meats that the United States lacks.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, "We welcome the lifting of these tariffs. It's good for Australian beef producers."

However, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that his Labor government will continue "to advocate for genuine reciprocal tariffs, which should be zero."

Trump describes some of the tariffs he imposed on goods shipped to the United States as "reciprocal" based on the size of the US trade deficit in goods with a particular country.

Albanese stated in televised remarks from Melbourne, "We strongly believe and will continue to advocate for zero tariffs."

The Australian Foreign Minister did not mention whether the center-left Albanese government now expects Trump to retract the 50% tariffs imposed on imports of Australian steel and aluminum to the United States.
