Khaberni - In a new step reflecting Hollywood's passion for brands that shake social media, Sony Pictures is preparing to produce a massive film inspired by the famous "Labubu" dolls, following the signing of an agreement this week with the Chinese gaming company owning the rights, according to what Hollywood Reporter revealed.
According to the British newspaper "The Guardian", despite the signing of the agreement, the details of the project remain unclear; as the director or producer has not yet been announced, and the most important question remains: Will the film be presented in live-action or animation?
Global Phenomenon
The Labubu dolls were born from the imagination of artist Casing Long, who drew inspiration for their designs from Scandinavian stories after relocating as a child from Hong Kong to the Netherlands.
The dolls first launched in 2019 in Southeast Asia through the company Pop Mart, which turned them into a global fashion trend, supported by waves of "unboxing" videos that achieved widespread popularity.
With adoption by major celebrities, the allure of "Labubu" soared to unprecedented levels, as Korean star Lisa of "Blackpink" attracted attention by attaching the dolls to her bags, while names like Rihanna and Emma Roberts helped transform them into luxury accessories.
Shopping Frenzy
The demand turned into a shopping frenzy; as new releases from Pop Mart stores sold out within just minutes.
Last year, the company's profits jumped by 350%, while limited editions recorded prices reaching hundreds of thousands in the auction market.
Iconic Characters
The anticipated film is expected to feature iconic characters like "Labubu" itself, the tribe leader "Zimomo", his companion "Mokoko", and his friend "Taikoku".
The Labubu project represents a new trend in Hollywood, where games are becoming a source of inspiration for films, similar to what happened with the "Barbie" movie, which grossed over one billion dollars globally in 2023.
American companies are capitalizing on this success by launching a wave of intellectual property projects related to games, as it is said that "Mattel" has offered more than 45 products to be turned into cinematic works.
In the same context, Sony and Mattel announced this week a new partnership to produce a film adapted from the famous "View Master" game.
