Khaberni - Russian neurology specialist Dr. Astanda Mushba warned that some common foods and drinks, when consumed excessively and regularly, may play a negative role in brain health deterioration, and increase the risk of dementia with aging.
In a press interview with the site «kp.ru», Dr. Mushba clarified that excessive consumption of fast food, ready-to-eat meals, and sweetened soft drinks causes cumulative damage to the nervous system, and affects the efficiency of the brain in performing its vital functions.
She pointed out that trans fats and saturated fats, frequently used in industrial baking, fried foods, and snacks, lead to increased blood cholesterol, which causes arteriosclerosis and limits the flow of oxygen to the brain. She added that this impairment in blood supply is one of the most significant factors in the deterioration of cognitive functions and the increased likelihood of developing dementia.
The neurology specialist also noted that the excess salt, heavily present in those foods, raises blood pressure and weakens the fine blood vessels in the brain, which may lead to minor strokes that affect cognitive ability over time.
Conversely, Dr. Mushba emphasized the importance of following a balanced diet to support brain health, noting that consuming lean meats, seafood, eggs, fresh dairy products, as well as fruits and vegetables, provides the essential elements that help delay age-related brain changes.
She affirmed that a healthy diet rich in vitamins and micronutrients can be an effective way to protect the brain, alongside its role in preventing chronic diseases associated with aging.
