Russia Challenges America by Proposing a Project Opposing the American Draft on Gaza

Khaberni - Russia proposed on Thursday a draft resolution at the United Nations concerning Gaza, challenging U.S. efforts to pass a draft text in the Security Council that would endorse President Donald Trump's plan to end the war in Gaza.

The United States officially distributed its draft resolution to the fifteen members of the Security Council last week, stating it had regional support for its resolution, which would grant a two-year mandate to a transitional governing body and an international force to stabilize the area.

In a memo to the Security Council members on Thursday afternoon, the Russian Mission at the United Nations stated that "its draft resolution is inspired by the American draft resolution".

The memo stated, “The goal of our draft is to enable the Security Council to adopt a balanced, acceptable, and unified approach towards achieving a sustainable cessation of hostilities.”

The Russian draft requests that the United Nations Secretary-General identify options for an international force to stabilize Gaza and does not mention the “Peace Council” that the United States proposed to manage the transitional period in Gaza.

The U.S. Mission to the United Nations urged the Security Council to proceed with approving the American text.

A spokesperson for the American mission stated, “Attempts to sow discord now – when agreement on this resolution is under active negotiation – have severe and tangible consequences that can be entirely avoided for the Palestinians in Gaza.”

The spokesperson added, “The ceasefire is fragile, and we urge the Council to unite and move forward to achieve the much-needed peace.”

Israel and Hamas agreed in October to the first phase of Trump’s 20-point plan on Gaza to stop a two-year long war and exchange hostages for Palestinian detainees. This plan is accompanied by the American draft resolution.

Trump ruled out sending American troops to the Gaza Strip, but officials are discussing forming a force of about 20,000 soldiers and holding talks with Indonesia, UAE, Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and Azerbaijan for participation.
