Belgium Thanks Jordan for Hosting Hundreds of Thousands of Refugees

Khaberni - The Belgian Ambassador to Jordan, Serge Dicksen, affirmed the depth of the relations between the two countries and the pivotal role that Jordan plays in establishing regional stability, stressing that Jordan's geopolitical status and its ability to overcome regional storms make it a strategic partner for Belgium and the European Union.

On the occasion of King's Day in Belgium, the ambassador said that Jordan is "an exceptional country that has faced difficult circumstances with dedication and resilience," adding that the European Union has made a "logical and wise" decision to elevate its partnership level with the Kingdom to affirm the importance of maintaining Jordan’s stability.

He mentioned Belgium's great appreciation for the Jordanian efforts in hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees despite the international decline in support, considering this commitment as "reflecting Jordan's deep sense of hospitality and care," and affirming that donor countries, including Belgium, have a responsibility to support Jordan in bearing this humanitarian burden.

Dicksen explained that the relations between the two countries are built on high levels, with strong ties and continuous communication between the royal families, noting that the appreciation Jordanians have for Belgium is "sincere and real," and that the same feelings are mutual.

The ambassador confirmed that, despite their relatively small size, the two countries share a clear vision for the importance of maintaining the international order based on rules, and constructive action within a multilateral system, relying on dialogue, acceptance of differences, and the formulation of shared goals and visions. He also noted that His Majesty King Abdullah II and His Majesty King Philippe share a focus on the concept of humanity and the dignity of the human being.

The two-state solution is at the heart of the Belgian stance

In discussing the situation in the Middle East, the ambassador affirmed that respect for international law is "the cornerstone" for world stability, and its violation leads to the spread of chaos, violence, and the resurgence of conflicts.

He said that Europe, despite difficult conditions, "continues to choose cooperation over conflict, and openness over exclusion," principles that Belgium sees as fundamental to achieving security and justice.

Dicksen condemned the serious humanitarian violations in Gaza, where the innocent die either from starvation or under bombing, describing the situation as having "lasted longer than it should and has brought disgrace upon all humanity."

He expressed his welcome for the ceasefire, calling for its use to establish unconditional humanitarian access and considering it a step towards a long-term political solution. He also warned not to overlook the violence of settlers and their land seizure in the West Bank, which threatens to foil reaching a balanced political solution towards a two-state solution.

The ambassador clarified that Belgium continued this year to cooperate with Jordan in humanitarian operations through aerial aid drops above Gaza amidst the blockade, and providing medical equipment to field hospitals in Gaza and the West Bank through the Jordanian Hashemite Charity Organization.

He added that Belgium, in coordination with other countries, made an important decision to recognize the state of Palestine, based on the foundations laid by France and Saudi Arabia, considering this step as a "strong political signal" that reaffirms his country's solid support for the two-state solution, and sends a message of hope to the Palestinian and Israeli people towards a better future.
