Khaberni - A joint research team of Russian and Chinese scientists, from Saratov State University in Russia and Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, discovered a safe method to slow brain aging and protect against dementia, using a technique based on stimulating the brain and its membranes with infrared light.
Oksana Semiatichkina Glushkovskaya, one of the study authors and head of the Department of Human and Animal Physiology at Saratov State University explained that “after 20 years of sleep deprivation (less than six hours per night), 30 percent of active and working people suffer from dementia, which is related to the fact that sleep is an important period for reactivating brain drainage where brain tissues eliminate toxic metabolites, and sleep deprivation, especially when it becomes a lifestyle over many years, as in the case of doctors, actors, pilots, and military personnel, can lead to an excessive accumulation of toxins that poison neural cells and impair memory and cognitive abilities,” as reported by "Sputnik" news agency.
Oksana said, “We conducted the study on aged mice, and found that this method reinstates brain drainage, accompanied by effective treatment for the imbalance in oxidation and reduction, neuroinflammation, and nerve damage, adding that after the radiation exposure, the mice also showed improvement in spatial learning and short-term memory”.
She noted that “the main advantage of this method is the possibility of using light therapy at home, as the light technologies for treating dementia can be wearable and portable”.
She added, “after the radiation exposure, the mice also showed improvement in spatial learning and short-term memory”.
Semiatichkina concluded, “The use of the new generation of photonic technologies, which are considered future medical technologies, in the form of wearable devices for the prevention and management of neurodegenerative diseases, will significantly improve people's quality of life and medicine, as well as reduce the economic costs of treatment and care for these patients.
These strategies meet the needs of national projects to maintain active longevity”.
The scientists explained: “The world's population is aging at an unprecedented rate; according to some predictions, the number of people over the age of 60 will reach two billion by 2050. This also contributes to the increase in cases of age-related neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis”.
The scientists affirmed that “People who work hard and sleep little are at risk”.
