Pellegrinis Bold Idea to Change Football Rules

Khaberni - Manuel Pellegrini, coach of Spanish Real Betis, dreams of a less boring, more entertaining football, interspersed with many goals, and for that reason, he suggests a rule inspired by basketball.

After his victory in the Europa League match against Lyon with two unanswered goals, Pellegrini proposed a bold idea to change the football rules.

Unlike former Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger, who calls for a revision of the offside law, Pellegrini does not support this change.

He believes that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system is already effective in reducing mistakes, and changing the offside rule would complicate matters.

Instead, he suggests introducing a rule inspired by basketball: once a team crosses the midfield line, they will not be allowed to pass the ball back to their half of the field.

More entertaining football

This rule would force teams, if implemented, to keep advancing forward, making the games more thrilling, lively, and offensive, according to Pellegrini.

The Chilean coach asserted that the time has come to make the game more vibrant and dynamic, away from boring sideways passes and retreats to the back.

In statements carried by the French radio "RMC Sport," he explained that allowing backward passes kills the rhythm and slows down the pace of play.

Pellegrini said, "Implementing this change will force players to always think about playing forward, leading to faster and more enjoyable matches."

He added, "Football needs an update to meet the needs of modern audiences."

The Chilean coach doubted that his proposal would lead to a radical change in the nature of the game, but he pointed out that evolution is necessary to keep football at the forefront of spectator sports.

Pellegrini said, "Adding an element preventing return to one's half of the field would provide more opportunities and increase pressure on defenses, meaning more goals and more enjoyable matches."

At 72, Pellegrini continues to make history with Betis, having won the Copa del Rey and reached the final of the European Conference League.
