Khaberni - In a tragic incident that shook the American public opinion, Maria Florinda Rios Perez de Velasquez (32 years old) — a mother of four children of Guatemalan descent — was accidentally killed while working in house cleaning in Indiana.
According to police reports in the city of Whitestown, Boone County, Maria went on the morning of Wednesday, November 5th to an address she thought was the required location for her work, accompanied by her husband who works with her in the same team.
However, the couple mistakenly entered another house on the same street, prompting the homeowner to shoot at them, thinking they were trying to break into the place.
The husband, who survived the incident, stated that Maria was holding a key provided by the company, and was trying to unlock the door when a single bullet was fired from inside the house, hitting her in the head and causing her to fall immediately.
The police confirmed that the initial report was under "attempted home invasion," before it was later clarified that the victim was a cleaning worker performing her job at the wrong address.
The authorities have not yet announced the name of the shooter, indicating that the case is still under investigation by the Boone County Prosecutor's Office to determine whether criminal charges will be filed or if the incident will be considered as "self-defense" under the state’s Castle Doctrine law.
The incident sparked widespread outrage and sympathy on social media, with activists calling for a review of shooting and self-defense laws, emphasizing that Maria was "a hardworking woman trying to make a living," and her sudden departure left four children without a mother.
