Khaberni - Armed men kidnapped an activist on the TikTok app in northern Mali and later executed her in a public square, as reported by her family and local officials, on Sunday.

Mariam Sise was posting videos from the city of Tonka in the Timbuktu region, and had about 90,000 followers, but her kidnappers accused her of collaborating with the army.

The news of her death shocked the country, which is ruled by a military council facing an armed insurgency since 2012.

Mariam's brother said: "The armed men arrested my sister on Thursday," adding that they accused her "of informing the Malian army about their movements." He explained that they took her the next day on a motorcycle to Tonka, where they shot her in Independence Square. I was among the crowd."

A security source reported: "Mariam Sise was assassinated in a public square in Tonka by armed men who accused her of filming them for the Malian army."

The source, who requested anonymity, described the act as "barbaric". A local official confirmed the execution took place, calling it "a vile act."

The military council is struggling to contain an ongoing armed rebellion for over a decade.

In recent weeks, fighters from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims, linked to al-Qaeda, imposed a blockade to prevent the movement of fuel trucks in Mali, forcing the government to close educational institutions and hindering the harvest in several areas.
