Melatonin Supplements Linked to Serious Heart Effects

Khaberni - Researchers have discovered a potential warning sign associated with taking melatonin supplements, which are prescribed for treating insomnia, and are turned to by some as an aid in falling asleep, although the body naturally produces the melatonin hormone to regulate sleep.

According to "Sorry Live," scientists found that those who used melatonin for at least one year were more likely to suffer from heart failure, or the need for hospitalization due to this condition, or death for any reason.

While the research team from New York State University highlighted safety concerns raised by these findings, they also noted that they were unable to prove that the supplements were the direct cause of this effect on the heart.

The findings suggest that the supplement may be linked to heart failure, particularly for those who use it for a year or more.

Melatonin Uses
Melatonin supplements are widely available in many countries, and each brand differs in its strength and purity. They are prescribed for treating insomnia, and it is usually advised to take them when traveling long distances where the body is exposed to a change in sleep and wake hours.

Concerning Results
Based on a large database, the main analysis of the study found that adults using melatonin to treat insomnia for 12 months or more had about a 90% higher likelihood of suffering from heart failure over five years compared to those who did not take it.

Those who took at least two medical prescriptions of melatonin, with at least a 90-day gap in between, had an 82% higher risk of heart diseases.

A secondary analysis found that those taking melatonin were about 3.5 times more likely to be hospitalized due to heart failure, compared to those who did not take it.

They were also about twice as likely to die for any other reason during the five-year period, compared to the group that did not take melatonin.
