Khaberni - Two experts agreed that the implementation of surveillance cameras supported by technology and artificial intelligence contributes to improving traffic safety, provided there is a clear legal framework and mechanisms for objections that ensure the rights of offenders, in addition to a sound infrastructure that ensures system effectiveness.

Former Minister of Transport Jamil Mujahed emphasized the importance of employing technology and artificial intelligence in addressing the traffic challenges facing cities, noting that this step represents a positive move towards achieving traffic safety and deterrence.

Mujahed explained during his talk on “Khaberni” on Sunday that the surveillance cameras operate around the clock, alongside the presence of human personnel in the field to ensure effective supervision and traffic regulation.

He highlighted the necessity of using technology to address traffic congestion in the city of Amman, stressing the importance of having a clear legal and legislative framework that defines types of violations and the procedures followed, in addition to establishing mechanisms for challenging the violations when needed.

He added that the reliability of the technology used represents a fundamental factor, along with providing indisputable evidence, working to enhance transparency and awareness of violations, and choosing the most suitable locations for installing cameras to achieve the desired goal.

For his part, Khalid Haddadin, an expert in transport and traffic engineering, said that it is essential to determine the entity responsible for installing the cameras, whether an investor or a specialist, with ensuring Amman Secretariat’s ability to monitor the work of specialized technicians to guarantee accurate results.

Haddadin pointed to the need to carefully study the locations to ensure the cameras' capability to improve traffic flow and reduce traffic accidents, especially those involving pedestrians, emphasizing the importance of providing a sound infrastructure at the installation sites.

He stressed that the cameras must have the ability to record violations through photos or video, with the creation of a platform for objection that ensures the offender's right to challenge and review the violation.
