Khaberni - In Tanzania, "treason" was charged against more than 200 people involved in the file of violent protests that were suppressed by the authorities following the past October elections.
Hundreds of people appeared before a court in the economic capital Dar es Salaam on Friday, according to judicial sources reported by "Agence France-Presse".
Lawyer Peter Kibatala told Agence France-Presse in court that charges of "treason" and "conspiracy to commit treason" were filed against more than 250 people in three separate cases.
Judicial sources in the court confirmed that they were aware of charges being directed against at least 240 people.
According to the indictment sheets, most of the pursued individuals were accused on the past October 29th, the day Tanzanians went to the polls, of "hindering the general presidential and legislative elections of 2025 with the aim of intimidating the executive authority".
The opposition party Chadema announced that at least 800 people were killed in the violence, with diplomatic and security sources confirming this toll, indicating reports of higher death numbers that could reach into the thousands.
President Samia Suluhu officially won the presidential election, from which her main competitors were excluded, after receiving 98% of the votes, but the opposition described the voting as a "farce".

A statement from the party on the X platform read, "The arrest of the Deputy Secretary-General means that only three of the six senior party leaders remain free."
