End of 40 years in politics Nancy Pelosi retires from Congress

Khaberni - Nancy Pelosi, the first woman to preside over the U.S. House of Representatives, retires from Congress.

On this Thursday, the Democratic representative, regarded as one of the most prominent U.S. political figures over the past four decades and the first woman to preside over the House of Representatives, announced that she will retire in January 2027 at the end of her current term.

85-year-old Pelosi said in a video on social media addressed to the residents of San Francisco, which she has represented since 1987: "I truly enjoyed representing your voice in Congress".

During the first term of Donald Trump (2017-2021), Pelosi, originally from California, became one of the Republicans' most prominent adversaries, first as the House Minority Leader, and starting from 2019 as the Speaker of the House after the Democrats regained the majority.

While holding this position, which often involves working behind the scenes, and which she previously held between 2007 and 2011, Nancy Pelosi became a key leadership figure in the American political scene.

Pelosi is largely credited for the passing of the healthcare reform accomplished by former President Barack Obama in 2010, as well as Joe Biden’s massive investment plans in 2021, often navigating conflicts between rival parties and even within her own party.

Pelosi left a significant impression with one of the most famous images from the first presidential term of Donald Trump, when she appeared grim-faced while sitting behind the Republican president as she listened to him during his annual State of the Union address in 2020, showing clear signs of annoyance.

As soon as Trump finished his speech that day, she tore up a copy of his speech in front of the astonished members of the House, later explaining that she intended to destroy a "stack of lies" with this gesture.

The most prominent milestone
However, one of the most notable milestones in her career was recorded on January 6, 2021, the day of the attack on the Capitol building by supporters of the Republican billionaire.

That day, when her team informed her of Donald Trump's intention to join the rioters who were about to attack the Capitol building, a plan he eventually abandoned, Pelosi loudly said, "If he comes, I will give him a beating. I have been waiting for this moment for a long time".

She added through gritted teeth, "I'll give him a beating, I'll go to jail but I'll be happy about it".

Donald Trump did not hesitate to attack Pelosi... he often called her "Crazy Nancy," and tried to depict her as a clear embodiment of the bad politicians he claims to be fighting.

In January 2022, she was forced to resign from her position as Speaker of the House when the Republicans regained control over it.

Nancy Pelosi also announced that she would step down from any leadership positions within the minority.

Pelosi will ultimately leave Congress after a year and a half, after forty years moving between positions in the corridors of the Capitol.
