Sudan Rapid Support Forces Agree to Humanitarian Ceasefire

Khaberni - The Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces agreed to a United States proposal to cease fire for humanitarian reasons, according to their statement.

On its part, the Sudanese army rejected the American proposal to cease fire on Wednesday, stating that it would mobilize public support to fight the "Rapid Support Forces" which had taken control of much of the western half of the country.

The war in Sudan broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces after months of escalating tensions over plans to integrate the two forces within the civilian transition process, leading to fierce confrontations in the capital Khartoum and several other regions.

The crisis has resulted in the worst humanitarian disaster the world has seen, with more than eight million people displaced, while millions faced the risk of famine due to the collapse of the healthcare system and the spread of diseases.

The current approval came after intense international mediation led by the United States, following the failure of several previous ceasefire agreements. The agreement aims to open humanitarian corridors to allow aid to reach affected areas.

Challenges still exist in implementing the agreement due to the widespread deployment of forces and multiple fronts, as clashes continue in Darfur and elsewhere amid the complexities of the political scene and overlapping regional interests.
