Khaberni - Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was re-elected as the head of the Likud Party and its official candidate for forming the upcoming government, after the nomination period closed without any other candidates stepping forward for competition, according to a statement issued by the party's Central Election Committee today, Thursday.
The committee mentioned that its meeting, which was held on the sixth of November, concluded that "Netanyahu is the sole candidate for the presidency of Likud, and therefore he is considered elected as the party leader and its candidate for prime minister in the upcoming 26th Knesset elections."
The statement noted that the decision was based on clause 59 of the party's regulations, which states that the sole candidate is automatically declared the winner if no other nominations are submitted by the specified deadline.
Thus, Netanyahu ensures leadership of Likud in the upcoming parliamentary elections without having to undergo internal elections, amid ongoing fissures within the ruling coalition and the political crises facing his government.
