Khaberni - British boxer Chantelle Cameron decided to relinquish her lightweight title granted by the World Boxing Council after she grew tired of being unable to compete on the same footing as men in 12 rounds.
Cameron stated, "It's time to take a stand for what's right and for the future of this sport."
This is a strong stance condemning gender inequality and calling for radical reforms by global governing bodies.
The road is still long
Cameron (34 years old) added, "Women's boxing has made great progress, but the road is still long. I have always believed in equality, which includes fighting the same number of rounds, equal opportunities, and equal respect."
In professional women's boxing, title matches are usually 10 rounds, each lasting two minutes, compared to men’s matches which are 12 rounds of three minutes each.
In late 2023, Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano, who had won four titles at that time, demanded the right to compete according to the same rules as men.
In response to the refusal of the World Boxing Council (WBC), she decided to relinquish her featherweight title.
Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council, explained at the time, "In tennis, women play 3 sets, and in basketball, the basket is lower and the ball smaller; these are sports that do not involve contact. We want to maintain the safety and health of female boxers."
