Khaberni - The Jordan Valley Authority, in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation and the Swiss Embassy, carried out protection works at Al-Wahidi Dam in Ma'an Governorate, at an estimated cost of 500 thousand dinars, aiming to increase the dam's durability and reduce potential risks.
The works included the construction of a water bypass, calming basins, and stone chains along the valley stream, as part of the Authority's ongoing efforts in maintaining the dams and enhancing their readiness, attended by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and representatives from the supporting Swiss Embassy for programs to improve water resource management.
The activities also involved building barriers in the upper part of the valley stream, with plans for additional cleaning works if resources are available.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Jihad Al-Muhammadi, said: "We reviewed the implementation works at Al-Wahidi Dam, where measures were implemented aimed at reducing the amount of water entering the dam body to avoid exceeding its capacity, which could pose a risk to the area. The purpose of these dams is to protect areas, replenish groundwater, and develop the agricultural lands in the surrounding and adjacent areas."
Al-Muhammadi added that the ministry continues the maintenance works for other dams, whether for the purpose of protecting cities or replenishing groundwater, confirming that such projects contribute to providing sustainable water sources and improving the environment through the creation of new aquatic environments.
These measures are part of the Jordan Valley Authority's efforts aiming to preserve water infrastructure and ensure the sustainability of water resources in the region, and support the agricultural sector and surrounding local communities.
