Khaberni - Israeli Security Minister Yisrael Katz announced today, Tuesday, the appointment of lawyer Itai Ofer as the Military Attorney General, succeeding Yifat Tomer Yerushalmi, who resigned from her position last Friday following the leak of a video documenting soldiers torturing a Palestinian detainee at "Sdei Teman" base.

Katz stated in a statement that "there is great importance at this time, following the serious facts that are unfolding, for the immediate appointment of a Military Attorney General from outside the prosecution service, one who is not tainted by any suspicion and has proper qualifications, capable of cleaning, restoring, and organizing the military prosecution based on principles that prioritize defending Israeli soldiers who fight heroically under difficult and complex conditions for the security of the State of Israel, and of course not to initiate and participate in blood libels that distort the image of the soldiers and harm their dignity and expose them to persecution worldwide."

Ofer served as the legal advisor to the security agency during the years 2017 – 2024, and was nominated by the Advisory Committee for High-Level Appointments as one of three candidates for the position of the Government's Legal Advisor, in the year 2022.
