Khaberni - The Sudanese Security and Defense Council, chaired by army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, discusses on Tuesday the ceasefire proposal submitted by the United States to end the bloody conflict in Sudan that has lasted for over two years, according to a government source in Port Sudan.

The source, who requested anonymity as they are not authorized to speak to the media, said, "The Security and Defense Council will hold a meeting today to discuss the American ceasefire proposal."

The Rapid Support Forces, which have been at war with the army since April 2023, appear to be preparing to launch an attack on the central region of Kordofan, having seized al-Fasher, the last army stronghold in Darfur, just over a week ago.

The U.S. Special Envoy for Africa, Masaad Bolus, conducted a series of meetings in Cairo in recent days, aiming to finalize the humanitarian ceasefire proposal that was submitted in mid-September, under the sponsorship of several mediators, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, according to various official statements issued in Cairo.

Among the prominent meetings Bolus held was one with the Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

During the talks, Abdel Aaty "emphasized the importance of uniting efforts to achieve a humanitarian ceasefire and a cessation of hostilities throughout Sudan, paving the way for the launch of a comprehensive political process in the country," according to a statement from the foreign ministry.

On Monday, Bolus met with Aboul Gheit and provided him with "a detailed explanation of recent efforts in Sudan to stop the war and rapidly introduce aid, initiating a Sudanese-Sudanese political process," according to a statement issued by the Arab League on Monday evening.

The "Quartet" group, consisting of the United States, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, has been engaged for months in diplomatic efforts aiming to reach a ceasefire in the ongoing war in Sudan for over 30 months.
