Khaberni - The Suez courthouse complex, located about 120 km east of Cairo, witnessed an electric elevator crash inside the family court building.
The elevator experienced a sudden fall from the second floor to the ground floor, carrying four lawyers, two of whom suffered scrapes and bruises.
An ambulance was dispatched immediately after the incident was reported, and a police emergency response team was sent to secure the site.
Witnesses reported that one of the injured was transported to the Suez Medical Complex for treatment, while the other lawyer refused transfer and received first aid inside the courthouse.
Repeated complaints about elevators and infrastructure
Lawyers confirmed that this incident is not the first of its kind, indicating that the same elevator had previously experienced a sudden fall.
The lawyers demanded urgent intervention to repair the fault radically, warning that such repeated incidents pose a direct threat to the lives of both employees and litigants.
It is noted that the Suez courthouse complex, which includes family, criminal, and civil courts, was built in 2010 as part of a judiciary expansion program, serving more than 500,000 citizens in the industrial and coastal area.
Recurrent elevator incidents in Egypt
Courthouse buildings in Egypt suffer from continuous complaints regarding infrastructure and elevators. The Lawyers Syndicate reported similar incidents in 2024 which led to a partial closure of the building.
This incident is part of a wider crisis at the national level, where Egypt recorded more than 50 elevator crash incidents in public buildings during 2024-2025, according to the Ministry of Health reports, most of which were due to negligence in regular maintenance.
Calls for enhanced safety and periodic maintenance
Lawyers and local officials emphasize the necessity of comprehensive maintenance for all elevators in government buildings and courts to ensure the safety of both workers and litigants and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
This comes at a time when safety experts call for the necessity of activating monitoring programs and conducting periodic inspections of elevators, applying strict standards for infrastructure in public buildings to avoid fatal accidents, and ensuring the safety of citizens and workers alike.
