A massive explosion shakes a building at the Medical School at Harvard University early Saturday, and police confirm that it was a deliberate act carried out by two masked individuals who fled the site.
Harvard University experienced a state of panic early Saturday, following a massive explosion that shook the "Goldenson" building belonging to the Medical School at the Longwood campus in Boston, in an incident described by authorities as a "deliberate act," with no human injuries reported.
Harvard University police confirmed in an official statement that the explosion occurred on the fourth floor of the building at 2:48 a.m. local time, clarifying that the first security officer to reach the scene noticed two unknown individuals fleeing the site immediately after the fire caused by the explosion started.
The police explained that the officer attempted to stop the suspects before heading to the source of the alarm on the upper floor, which revealed limited material damage.
Boston police quickly evacuated the entire building and conducted a thorough search for other explosives, but the results of the inspection were negative, while the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) took over the investigation of the incident in cooperation with university police.
Authorities released pictures captured by surveillance cameras showing the suspects dressed in dark clothes and masks hiding their features, one of them wearing a blue hoodie and jeans, and police urged anyone with information about their identity to contact them immediately.
The Goldenson building is part of Harvard Medical School and is used for conducting advanced research in the biosciences. By Saturday evening, neither the university nor security agencies had released any additional details regarding the motives for the attack or whether it was connected to any internal activity or previous threats.
