What are the indications for using Nexium tablets?

Nexium, scientifically called Esomeprazole, is a proton pump inhibitor that works by reducing acid secretion in the stomach. It is used for treating frequent acidity, typically not less than twice a week, and can provide a sense of relief and reduce heartburn or chest burning especially after eating or at bedtime.

Nexium tablets treat esophagus inflammation caused by acid reflux and are used for a long period for complete recovery from the effects of reflux.

The doctor may prescribe Nexium tablets to treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, taken as part of a triple therapy "usually with two antibiotics like Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin" to eradicate the bacteria and heal from the ulcer.

Specialist doctors prescribe Nexium tablets to treat stomach ulcers caused by long-term use of painkillers like Ibuprofen or Voltaren, as well as for preventing ulcers that may occur due to painkiller consumption.

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare condition where there is a severe increase in stomach acid secretion, so the specialist doctor may prescribe these tablets for treatment.

 

What is the dosage and how to use it?

The usual dosage is 20 to 40 mg once daily, 30 minutes before eating. In severe cases, the dosage may be increased under medical supervision.

For mild acidity, Nexium tablets can be used for a short duration of 2 to 4 weeks depending on the condition, and in the case of chronic reflux or ulcers, treatment usually continues from 4 to 8 weeks and sometimes longer in advanced cases.

It is essential to avoid breaking or chewing the capsule. It must be taken with sufficient water half an hour before eating on an empty stomach.

It is advisable to consult a doctor when taking certain other medications to avoid interactions with Nexium tablets, such as Clopidogrel or Warfarin drugs.

 

What are the side effects of Nexium tablets?

Headache - Mild nausea or dizziness - Slight stomach pain or bloating - Constipation or diarrhea - Dry mouth

2- Rare

Kidney issues such as acute kidney inflammation - Magnesium deficiency in the blood in case of long-term use of Nexium tablets - Increased risk of bone fractures especially in elderly - Intestinal infections caused by specific bacteria because these tablets reduce stomach acid - Rash or severe allergies.

 

What are the warnings and precautions?
