Khaberni - The Executive Director of Traffic in the Greater Amman Municipality, Engineer Mohammed Jadua, stated that there is a plan to install more than 5500 surveillance cameras in the capital Amman by 2026, as part of a comprehensive project to develop the traffic surveillance system and improve road safety.

He added through radio statements that the Municipality has already started installing the first 2500 cameras, which will cover intersections, tunnels, and traffic islands, noting that these cameras will be directly connected to the Municipality's traffic control center, facilitating the management of movement in cooperation with the Traffic Department.

He added that the second half of 2026 will see a new tender for installing an additional 3000 cameras, including cameras designated for monitoring traffic violations such as not wearing seat belts, using the phone while driving, changing lanes unexpectedly, parking in no-parking zones, and exceeding speed limits.

Jadua also mentioned the introduction of a new technology to monitor the speed rate between two points, aiming to curb the manipulation of vehicle speeds after passing the fixed cameras. He confirmed that this technology would be applied on long streets like Jordan Street, the Beltway, and the road to the airport, inspired by successful experiences in neighboring countries like the UAE.

He indicated that 67 radar cameras would be installed at the beginning of next year to directly monitor speed, alongside cameras at traffic lights to monitor violations of the red signal and improper stopping.

Regarding the cameras currently scattered on secondary streets, Jadua explained that they are part of the command and control center, some are for public security, and others for monitoring violations.

He affirmed that the project is part of a suite of projects under Amman Smart City, which includes establishing a central hub for monitoring traffic movement and all associated cameras and lines, mentioning that this step will contribute to building an accurate database on types and numbers of vehicles, which assists in managing traffic movement more efficiently.
