Trump Announces Reduction of Tariffs on Chinese Imports to 47 and a OneYear Trade Agreement

Khaberni - American President Donald Trump said his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping was "wonderful" and involved the making of "many decisions," pointing out that both sides agreed Xi would do his "utmost" to stop the substance fentanyl.

Trump explained that he cannot say that all issues were discussed, but he affirmed significant progress, noting the reduction of customs tariffs on Chinese goods to 47% instead of 57%.

Trump added that the agreement with China would last for one year and could be extended, mentioning that all issues related to rare earth metals were settled.

In this context, an American official accompanying Trump on his trip stated that China would continue exporting rare earth metals to the United States.

Trump went straight to the presidential plane after his first direct meeting with Xi in six years, held in Busan, South Korea.

He rated his meeting with President Xi as "12 out of 10," confirming that he would visit China in April next year, and that Xi would visit the United States later.

He mentioned that he would work with the Chinese President on the Ukrainian file "to reach something," while the meeting did not address the issue of Taiwan.

In other news, Trump said the United States might find it "appropriate" to conduct a nuclear weapons test "as others are doing so."

Trump and Xi met with the aim of reaching a truce in the trade war between the world's two largest economies, shortly after the American president announced that his country would resume nuclear testing.

Trump praised Xi and described him as "a very tough negotiator" during their handshake in Busan and said, "We will have a great understanding, we have always had a great relationship."

He added that a trade agreement with China could be signed on Thursday.

For his part, the Chinese president told his American counterpart that although their countries do not always agree in viewpoints, they should strive to be "partners and friends."

Xi said at the beginning of the talks, "China and the United States can jointly bear the responsibility as two great nations and work together to accomplish more great and tangible things for the benefit of our countries and the world."

The meeting was attended by several American officials, notably Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bisent, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

From the Chinese side, the talks were particularly attended by the Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, and Vice Premier He Lifeng.

The recent statements by the American president regarding nuclear weapons testing expanded the scope of his talks with Xi.

Before the meeting in Busan began, Trump stated that he directed the Department of Defense to "begin testing" American nuclear weapons, after Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier on Wednesday said that Moscow had successfully tested an underwater Russian drone capable of carrying nuclear warheads, in defiance of Washington's warnings.

Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that the United States possesses more nuclear weapons than any other country, adding that "Russia is in second place, and China is in third place by a significant margin, but they will be equals in five years."

According to the "Atomic Scientists Bulletin," China conducted its last nuclear test in 1990. The last American test was in 1992, and the Russian one was in 1990. The most recent nuclear test was conducted by North Korea in 2017.

The conflict between China and the United States, which includes everything from rare metals to soybeans and port fees, has destabilized markets and paralyzed supply chains for months.

Following fruitful preparatory talks by negotiators from both parties, Trump said Wednesday while en route to South Korea, "Many problems will be solved."

He added, "We have been talking with them... I think we will achieve a very good result for our country and for the world."
