Causes of Eye Pink and Its Types

Khaberni - Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is a common condition characterized by inflammation or infection affecting the conjunctiva of the eye, the transparent membrane that covers the white of the eye and supports the inner surface of the eyelid. Pink eye can be caused by several reasons, including viral, bacterial, allergic infections, and exposure to external irritants.

The Viral Pink Eye
Viral pink eye, or viral conjunctivitis, is a type of pink eye that occurs due to a viral infection. It is one of the most common types and often heals by itself without the need for medical treatment. However, in severe infection cases, the use of drugs such as corticosteroids may be necessary. Common viruses that cause this type of pink eye include adenoviruses, enteroviruses, and viruses associated with diseases such as measles, chickenpox, rubella, and mumps.

The Bacterial Pink Eye
Bacterial pink eye, also known as bacterial conjunctivitis, is another type of pink eye characterized by its widespread spread. The infection is usually transmitted through contact with infected individuals or as a result of an infection in the sinuses or ear. Bacterial pink eye is typically treated with topical antibiotics, and the treatment period may range from one to two weeks. Some of the most notorious bacteria causing this type of pink eye include Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The Allergic Pink Eye and External Irritants
Allergic pink eye occurs as a result of an allergic reaction to allergens such as pollen dust and animal fur, and this type of pink eye may be seasonal or persist throughout the year. It usually appears in people who suffer from other allergic diseases such as eczema and asthma. On the other hand, pink eye can occur due to exposure to external irritants such as smoke, dust, and chemicals. Wearing contact lenses longer than recommended or not cleaning them properly can also lead to conjunctivitis. If symptoms persist for more than a day or if the irritant is a caustic chemical, it is essential to consult a doctor immediately for appropriate treatment.

There are several other causes that may lead to pink eye, including fungi, amoeba and parasites, blocked tear ducts in newborns, and sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia and gonorrhea.
