Khaberni - A violent tribal conflict was ignited by a student altercation at a school in the city of Nasiriyah, Dhi Qar province (southern Iraq), capturing the attention of digital platforms, amid calls for action by relevant authorities and forced disarmament.

In detail, a minor disagreement between a group of students quickly escalated after the intervention of their families from both sides, turning into an armed clash where light and medium weapons were used within residential areas.

Recorded scenes from the incident site showed thick smoke rising from the area and gunfire could be heard, while initial investigations indicate that the incident stems from an old dispute between two tribes.

This armed confrontation resulted in two deaths and six others severely injured, along with the burning of two tribal guesthouses, one of which belonged to a tribe not involved in the dispute.

At an official level, the police forces of Dhi Qar intervened to resolve the conflict, but the clash expanded to include confrontations between security forces and armed individuals from both sides.

Latterly, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced in a statement the arrest of 27 suspects involved in the conflict, referring them to relevant authorities, and confiscated a "Kalashnikov" rifle along with a number of light and medium weapons and ammunition.

Anger and Demands

The "Shabakat" program observed - in its episode (2025/10/27) - some of the comments on digital platforms, which widely reacted to the tribal clash in Dhi Qar.

Among these comments, Nasser Al-Shami called for the urgent action of security forces and the disarmament of tribes and restricting weapons to the state’s hands, tweeting:

The state must be decisive towards the rampant firearms because we have become like a forest teeming with beasts. Tribal disarmament is essential since now the enemy is their cousin and brother.

by Nasser Al-Shami

Similarly, Abu Hussein Al-Tamimi suggested sending the Counter-Terrorism Service to Dhi Qar and tasking them with disarmament, writing:

We demand the commander-in-chief of the armed forces to send the Anti-Terrorism Service to Dhi Qar, especially the south of the province, and to disarm forcefully. This situation is unsettling.

by Abu Hussein Al-Tamimi

"Ya Sahib Al-Zaman" expressed deep regret about the tribal conditions, highlighting the importance of the role of schools and the Ministry of Education, and denounced their transformation into "a battleground for settling scores".

It's very unfortunate that simple student disputes turn into tribal conflicts that threaten social peace. Schools should be places for education and learning, not arenas for settling scores. There is a need for greater awareness among parents and elders to exercise restraint and resolve issues with wisdom instead of violence.

by Ya Sahib Al-Zaman

Abbas noted the repeat occurrence of tribal conflicts in Dhi Qar without serious intervention by the authorities to put a definitive end to them and prevent their recurrence, tweeting:

Every year such incidents repeat in Dhi Qar and the state does nothing. They should lock them up from the oldest to the youngest. Enough recklessness with human lives.

by Abbas

It should be noted that the provinces of Maysan, Dhi Qar, and Basra lead in tribal conflicts in Iraq, with Dhi Qar alone experiencing more than 100 disputes last year, posing a significant security and social challenge for Iraqi cities.
