Legal Precedent in Turkey Man to Pay Cat Alimony for Up to 10 Years After Divorce

Khaberni - In an unusual case that may pave the way for new legal precedents, a court in Istanbul included alimony specifically designated for cats in a divorce agreement between two Turkish spouses, after they mutually agreed to dissolve their marriage.

In detail, the husband, Bora B., agreed to pay 10,000 Turkish Lira (about $240 US) every three months to his former wife Ezra B., for taking full custody of their two cats for the remaining years of their lives, which could be up to ten years.

The agreement also stipulates an annual increase in this amount according to the consumer price index, as determined by the Turkish Statistical Institute, according to the website "Audit Central".

Despite neither party demanding personal alimony or compensation, the emergence of "cat alimony" in the divorce document drew significant attention in legal and media circles within Turkey, being presented as a modern model for supporting pets after separation and it may serve as a reference for similar cases in the future.
