The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday the arrest of one of the "most prominent criminals during the era of the defunct regime" in the city of Aleppo in the north of the country.
The ministry stated in a press release, "Intelligence and investigation teams conducted extensive monitoring and tracking operations, which culminated in locating one of the most prominent criminals of the defunct regime, in the Al-Hulk area of Aleppo, known as Ali Karknawi, also known as 'Abu al-Fida'. Based on an order issued by the Public Prosecution, the Anti-Terrorism Branch in the province raided his location and arrested him."
It added that "data indicate his involvement in suppressing peaceful demonstrations, during his former role as an officer with the rank of Major, in addition to leading an armed group and joining the 'National Defense' militia and other sectarian militias. He also exploited his candidacy for membership in the People's Council to obtain official cover for his criminal activities."
According to the statement, "the detainee was referred to the competent authorities to complete the investigations, in preparation for presenting him to the specialized judiciary."
