Khaberni - Excessive consumption of chamomile tea may cause various health issues, and can be dangerous for certain individuals who take specific medications.
It is usually safe to drink 1 to 3 cups daily, but sensitivity varies, so those on medication or with health issues should consume less and monitor their condition.
The side effects of excessive chamomile drinking include:
1. Nausea and vomiting
Chamomile is believed to help relieve nausea in some people. However, excessive consumption may lead to the opposite effect if taken frequently and over a long period.
2. Increased risk of bleeding
Chamomile tea can also be dangerous for those taking blood thinners, or other drugs that are metabolized in the liver.
According to "Free Well Health," Kerry Gans, a nutrition specialist at Mount Sinai, stated: "Chamomile contains natural coumarin compounds, which may enhance the effects of blood thinners like warfarin and increase the risk of bleeding if consumed in large amounts."
She added, "Anyone taking prescription medications should consult a healthcare provider before regularly consuming chamomile."
3. Interactions with birth control
Excessive drinking of chamomile tea may also affect the effectiveness of birth control methods.
Research suggests that chamomile might reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills, and could exacerbate conditions that make a woman sensitive to estrogen, including breast or uterine cancer.
4. Allergic reactions
Gans explained, "Those who are allergic to plants such as ragweed may experience irritation or swelling in the skin."
These reactions can also occur in individuals allergic to chrysanthemums or marigold.
5. Drowsiness
Anyone taking medication to enhance sleep should be cautious when drinking chamomile tea. There are "concerns about interaction with sedative medications," as it may increase drowsiness when taken with sedatives.
