Court obliges TikTok influencers to marry after controversial video

Khaberni - A judicial incident in Kano, Nigeria, garnered public attention, after a local court issued a decree requiring two TikTok celebrities to complete their marriage within 60 days.

This occurred following their publication of a video described as "indecent", which caused wide disapproval in conservative circles.

The influencers, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, were seen in footage exchanging kisses and embracing each other, which the local authorities considered as behavior contrary to the social and religious traditions prevalent in the region.

The verdict stated that the Hisbah Police in Kano would execute the court's decision by consummating the marriage between the two individuals within the next two months. Baba Jibo Ibrahim, spokesperson for the judiciary authority, said: “The court has ordered the Hisbah police to formalize the marriage of the man and woman after they publicly displayed their love on the TikTok platform, and the decision aims to preserve the moral values of the society.”

A Hisbah police official mentioned that Idris and Basira consented to comply with the judgment and complete the marriage. The Hisbah police in Kano are known for their strictness in monitoring the behavior of online influencers and halting any content considered immoral or contrary to religious and social traditions.

Conversely, the Nigerian Bar Association criticized the decision, deeming it “unconstitutional and illegal,” affirming that no court has the authority to force two individuals to marry, as reported by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
