Khaberni - Fadwa Barghouti, wife of the Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, has called on US President Donald Trump to work towards her husband's release, after Trump announced that he "will make a decision" concerning the case.
Fadwa Barghouti said in a statement to Time magazine, "Mr. President, there is a real partner waiting for you — someone who can help realize the shared dream of a just and lasting peace in the region. For the freedom of the Palestinian people and the peace of future generations, help release Marwan Barghouti."
Trump had made his remarks in an interview with Time, when asked whether he would support the release of Barghouti, who has long been viewed by Palestinians and some diplomats as a potential leader.
He said, "I literally faced this question about 15 minutes before your call. That was the question. That was my question for today. So, I will make a decision."
Barghouti, aged 66, has been detained in Israeli prisons since 2002, and was sentenced in 2004 to five life sentences.
Trump, who has been credited with efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, faces a more complex task of devising a governance framework for Gaza's population of around two million people in the post-war period.
