Khaberni - American celebrity Kim Kardashian announced that she was diagnosed with cerebral artery expansion during a teaser for the seventh season of her reality show "The Kardashians".
In the clip, Kardashian said: "There's like a small expansion," to which her sister Kourtney Kardashian Parker responded: "Wow". Kim mentioned that stress might be a cause behind the expansion, while the clip showed her undergoing a brain scan.
What is cerebral artery expansion?
Cerebral artery expansion is relatively common, with one in every 50 people suffering from it unknowingly, because most unruptured cases do not cause noticeable symptoms. In some rare cases, a large expansion may lead to severe headaches, weakness, speech or balance difficulties, and a ruptured expansion can cause a sudden headache considered the worst headache in the patient's life, along with nausea, double vision, loss of consciousness or seizures. Ruptured expansions can lead to stroke, brain damage, or death.
According to Dr. Shazam Hussain, Director of Cerebrovascular Center at Cleveland Clinic, a cerebral artery expansion is like "a weak spot on a tire", and in many cases, it can be monitored without surgical intervention. Meanwhile, Dr. Aditya Pandey, Head of Neurosurgery at University of Michigan Health, points out that treatment of the expansion depends on the location, size, shape, and family history of the patient, in addition to factors that increase the likelihood of expansion or bleeding such as smoking and uncontrolled high blood pressure.
Kardashian revealed the possibility of a link between stress and the expansion, but doctors confirmed that there is no direct evidence connecting stress alone to cerebral expansions.
However, ongoing stress can lead to high blood pressure, a known risk factor increasing the likelihood of expansions. Underlying causative factors include uncontrolled high blood pressure, smoking, and family history.
It is noted that Kardashian had previously promoted full-body MRI scans, despite doctors' warnings that these tests may not be necessary for all patients.
