Khaberni - It is natural to feel tired after a long day, especially if you have been on your feet, but noticeable swelling and pain in the legs by evening could indicate another cause.
According to Dr. Philippa Kay, "The most common cause is edema - fluid accumulation under the skin - which tends to gather in the feet and ankles due to gravity."
Kay explains, "This could simply be due to standing or sitting for long periods, and it's more common in hot weather, during pregnancy, if you are overweight, or as a side effect of some medications such as certain blood pressure drugs."
Varicose veins
According to "Daily Mail", Kay points out varicose veins as another cause.
In this case, the tiny valves in the veins stop working properly, leading to blood pooling, vein swelling, and twisting.
This may cause swelling, heaviness, pain, itching, and sometimes changes in skin color.
Peripheral artery disease
In rare cases, the swelling may be linked to peripheral artery disease, where fatty deposits accumulate in the blood vessels and reduce blood flow to the legs.
This may cause pain - especially when walking - accompanied by skin paleness or shininess, and in severe cases, ulcers.
Risk factors for this condition include smoking, obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
Muscle twitching
Dr. Philippa Kay explains, "Muscle twitching is called fasciculations, which are small muscle tremors under the skin."
Most people experience them at some point, often after strenuous exercise, dehydration, or overuse of muscles, and they usually calm down with rest and intake of food and fluids.
This condition in the eyelid is known as eyelid twitching, which may occur due to fatigue or bright light or staring at screens.
Stress or general illness may also increase the visibility of these spasmodic tremors.
Although fasciculations can occur in motor neuron disease, they are often accompanied by other neurological symptoms such as gradual muscle weakness, stiffness, or difficulties with speech and swallowing.
