Khaberni - The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced the arrest of Major General Akram Saloum al-Abdullah, an officer in the regime of the ousted president Bashar al-Assad, who is accused of serious violations against the detainees in Sednaya prison.
The ministry said in a statement on Wednesday, "The Counter-Terrorism Branch in Damascus governorate carried out a precise operation, following accurate field monitoring and continuous observation, resulting in the arrest of the criminal general Akram Saloum al-Abdullah, who held several positions, the most prominent of which was the position of Military Police Commander in the Ministry of Defense between 2014 and 2015, during the rule of the defunct regime."
The statement added that preliminary investigations showed that al-Abdullah "was directly responsible for carrying out liquidation operations of detainees inside the military prison of Sednaya (the first military prison) during the period he commanded the Military Police."
The ministry explained that it had referred al-Abdullah to the competent authorities to complete the investigations in preparation for presenting him to the judiciary to take the necessary legal actions against him.
Since the overthrow of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, the Syrian security forces have arrested numerous officers, militia leaders, and former officials involved in crimes against Syrians.
About a week ago, the authorities arrested Namir al-Assad, one of the cousins of the ousted president, in the city of Qardaha in the Latakia countryside in northwest Syria, described as one of the most prominent drug dealers and involved in crimes during the period of the previous regime.
