Meta lays off 600 employees in its AI unit despite massive investments

Khaberni - Meta has announced the layoff of about 600 employees from its artificial intelligence unit, as part of efforts to reduce management levels and accelerate the pace of work within the company.

A spokesperson for "Meta" confirmed that the layoffs included employees in the AI infrastructure units, alongside FAIR research teams and other roles associated with product development.

The decision was made through an internal memo from the company's chief AI officer, Alexander Wang, who joined "Meta" last June in a $14.3 billion investment deal related to Scale AI, according to a report published by "CNBC" and viewed by "Alarabiya Business".

Despite the wave of layoffs, "Meta" continues to pump billions of dollars into artificial intelligence projects to keep up with major competitors like "OpenAI" and "Google", where it announced on Tuesday a $27 billion deal with Blue Owl to fund a massive data center in Louisiana, USA.

It is expected that this center, named “Hyperion”, will cover an area equivalent to a significant part of Manhattan Island, as confirmed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a previous post.

Analysts suggest that this move represents an attempt to balance operational expenses with massive expansion in artificial intelligence projects, amid a global race heatedly vying for control over the next generation of smart technologies.
