Khaberni - When it comes to bone health, most people automatically think that calcium and dairy products are the easiest way to enhance their strength. However, studies have found that one fruit, dried plums, may be more effective at protecting bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones lose their density, become more fragile, and are more susceptible to fractures over time.
This condition affects women more, but men can also be affected.
Hormone changes
According to "Soury Life," the hormone estrogen plays a role in bone health, so women after menopause are more susceptible to osteoporosis as their hormone levels decrease.
While medications are available to treat and prevent this condition, dietary and lifestyle changes can be just as important, with dried plums, or prunes, serving as a potential natural alternative.
Bone density
A recent study found that consuming just one serving of dried plums daily can enhance bone density and prevent fractures.
The study, which was based on a 12-month trial, found that consuming 50 grams daily, equivalent to 5 or 6 dried plums, can help prevent the loss of mineral density in hip bones in postmenopausal women.
Dr. Ashley Inide explains: "This is particularly important for women who are unable to take prescribed medications. More studies are needed, but this fruit may also reduce the risk of hip fractures."
Dried plums contain numerous vital nutrients, such as vitamin K and potassium, which aid in the bone-building process. They also reduce inflammation, which is a major factor in bone density loss.
