Khaberni - According to the American website "Axios", quoting White House officials, the administration of President Donald Trump has stopped working on holding a second summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, amid stalled diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
There are no plans for a near meeting between Trump and Putin
A White House official told the site, "There are currently no plans for a meeting between President Trump and President Putin in the near future," adding that recent developments in Ukraine have made conditions unfavorable for the summit that was scheduled to be held in the Hungarian capital Budapest in the next two weeks.
The official noted that US Defense Secretary Mark Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a call described as "productive," but he clarified that "there is currently no need for an additional personal meeting between the ministers."
Disagreements about a ceasefire in Ukraine
Western diplomats had earlier revealed that Moscow's refusal of an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine threatens to fail the anticipated summit between Trump and Putin, especially after a preparatory meeting scheduled between Rubio and Lavrov in Budapest next Thursday was postponed.
European capitals urged Washington to adhere to its position calling for an immediate ceasefire based on the current lines of combat, as a starting point for any future peace negotiations.
Moscow refuses limited concessions
In contrast, Moscow insists that Ukraine must agree in advance to give up more territory as a condition for any ceasefire, hindering American and European mediation efforts.
Last week, President Trump stated that he aims to end the war through a direct summit with Putin, after phone conversations he had with the Russian leader and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but field and political differences prompted the White House to temporarily suspend preparations.
