A disastrous act an Iraqi toddler swallows 15 birth control pills

Khaberni - A medical team in the emergency department of Al-Qurna General Hospital in Basra Governorate, Iraq, managed to save the life of a two-year-old girl who accidentally swallowed 15 birth control pills, in an incident that raised concerns about the risks of leaving medications within children's reach.

A statement issued by the Iraqi Ministry of Health clarified that the girl arrived at the emergency department in critical condition, as she was nearly unconscious and suffering from continuous vomiting and a sharp drop in blood pressure, which necessitated urgent medical intervention to save her life.

Doctor Fatima Qasim Hussein, a member of the team overseeing the girl's case, stated that the medical staff immediately proceeded to perform an emergency stomach wash and provide the necessary first aid, before putting her under continuous medical and nursing supervision in the hospital.
She added that meticulous monitoring continued for about five continuous hours, until the girl's condition stabilized completely and she left the hospital in good health.

The doctors at the hospital warned about the dangers of leaving medicines within children's reach at home, pointing out that such cases could lead to severe drug poisoning or acute hormonal disorders.

The hospital administration urged parents to store medicines in closed and secure locations, and to visit health centers immediately in case of any unintended drug ingestion, even if it seems minor.
