Khaberni - Officials said that Russia launched a new attack on the border region of Chernihiv in Ukraine, on Monday, leading to power outages across areas in the north, including the main town outside the now-defunct Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

The local energy company in the region stated that the latest attack targeted an energy site, but did not specify which one.

Yuri Fomitchev, mayor of Slavutych, which is 45 kilometers west of the Chernobyl station in the Kyiv region, reported on Telegram that the power was cut off in part of the town due to the attack.

The head of the Kyiv region also said that emergency crews are working to restore electricity.

The Russian attacks with drones and missiles in recent weeks have focused on the Ukrainian electricity grid and the gas sector as winter approaches amidst the ongoing war now lasting more than three and a half years.

Earlier this month, bombing of Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine cut off electricity to more than a million people.

Russian attacks this month forced Ukraine to shut down several key gas facilities, making Kyiv in need of more imports.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kyiv might import gas worth two billion dollars from Europe, the United States, and Azerbaijan this winter.

Ukraine has also launched long-range attacks on Russian energy targets, including at least 58 attacks on major sites since the beginning of August.
