Khaberni - Devastating floods swept through villages in the state of Alaska, causing the displacement of over 2,000 residents and widespread damage, and prompted Governor Mike Dunleavy to request the White House declare a major disaster.
Starting from October 8, a series of strong storms, including remnants of Typhoon Halong, brought strong winds, record water levels, and extensive coastal and river flooding across northern, western, and southwestern Alaska.
Governor Dunleavy's request stated that more than 2,000 Alaska residents are sheltering in schools or urban areas due to damaged infrastructure.
In the Kipnuk area, about 90% of the buildings were destroyed, including vital facilities, while 35% of the buildings in Quinhagak were destroyed, with surrounding areas reporting significant damage to residential buildings and infrastructure.
Politicians, including Senators Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski, sent a letter urging President Donald Trump to approve Governor Dunleavy's request for a federal disaster declaration. This would allow the allocation of additional federal resources to support the affected areas.
